Keeping up to date with RSS

Friday 10th March 2006

Have you noticed the little orange boxes throughout some of our latest creations, well we are now implementing RSS into all new dynamic websites with updatable news. If you are wondering what is RSS please read below, I have included a insert from wikipedia.org

The upcoming release of Internet Explore 7 contains a feed reader which automatically recognises websites with RSS and gives the visitor the option of subscribing to the feed. This allows the visitor to check for news or learn of your latest special directly from their browser everyday without having to visiting your site constantly.

Mozilla Firefox already features a news reader but with the release if IE7 the amount of Internet users using RSS will dramatically increase allowing your new website to fully take advantage of this new trend.

Some uses for RSS:
- News
- Advertise specials
- Advertise new products
- Corporate Blog (Corporate news on the personal level)

Internet Explorer 7 is currently available as a download in a beta form from the Microsoft website. Having downloaded this beta l have been able to add the upcoming IE7 to the list of common browsers l use to check the compatibility of your website to ensure it works correctly for all Internet users.

My personal opinion of IE7 is that it's a great browser. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) is different from IE6. Upgrades within the web browser allow some really cool features for websites.

IE7 will be released in December 06 (hopefully) but until then all new websites and current ones will be upgraded with IE7 and Mozilla rich features which ensures your website will always stay on top as well as be compatibly with current browsers.

What an RSS? - SOURCE: wikipedia.org

Web feeds are widely used by the weblog community to share the latest entries' headlines or their full text, and even attached multimedia files. Since mid-2000, use of RSS has spread to many of the major news organizations, including Reuters, CNN, PR Newswire, and the BBC. These providers allow other websites to incorporate their "syndicated" headline or headline-and-short-summary feeds under various usage agreements. RSS is now used for many purposes, including marketing, bug-reports, or any other activity involving periodic updates or publications. Many corporations are turning to RSS for delivery of their news, replacing email and fax distribution.

As the mainstream media attempts to realize the full potential of RSS, the new media is utilizing RSS by bypassing traditional news sources. Consumers and journalists are now able to have news constantly fed to them instead of searching for it.

A program known as a feed reader or aggregator can check a list of feeds on behalf of a user and display any updated articles that it finds. It is common to find web feeds on major websites and many smaller ones.

RSS-aware programs are available for various operating systems. Client-side readers and aggregators are typically constructed as standalone programs or extensions to existing programs such as web browsers.
